Lost Without Exposure ~ From Shobi, The Editor

Several months ago while reading a magazine the words "lost without exposure" jumped out at me. Several times in that week the same words continued to come to me - on the radio, in the newspaper, on the web. I began to ask myself "What does this mean?" It became clear to me when a clown friend called me one night saying, "You know Shobi, if it were not for The Hospital Clown Newsletter, all the work we do would never be known to the world.

Some of the articles are still being reformatted for the web. They remain in black bold letters. I am working on getting all of the first 15 years of the newsletter 1996-2010 on line for free reading.

The articles in Past Issues are in PDF Format.  Some of the files are large and may take time to download, depending on your Internet connection

If you don't have Acrobat Reader 9.0, you might want to upgrade -free at Adobe Reader

This is the issue of The Hospital Clown Newsletter published after 9/11 (2001).

Shobi was in England at that time at a Clowns International Festival. I bought this print of a Hobo Clown by Chuck Oberstein at an auction on September 10, 2001 - the night before tragedy struck Wall Street and the World Trade Center Buildings.

I've never been really interested in the Hobo clown, but for some reason (unknown that night) my hand went up during the auction and I had the high bid.  So I just took it home and put it on my desk in the hotel wondering why I had bought a print of a painting of a hobo shedding a tear over the stock mark crash of the 1920's.

The next day, after my workshop, I was told about the attack on the World Trade Center near Wall Street in New York City.  When I got back to my hotel after watching the twin towers collapse on TV, there was this print sitting in my hotel room. There was the cover of my next newsletter.

Clowning in an Ocean of Grief: Comments from clowns and stories of clowns who went down to Ground Zero after the tragedy in New York City.

Clowns do make a difference . . and I have the memories to prove it. John Kapherer aka “Clem T” of Ramsey New Jersey came home from work, got into “clown,” took the train to Penn Station in NYC and walked down to Ground Zero. Here are some of his comments.

Clown National Guard: The Clowns continued to go down to ease the burden of the workers at Ground Zero in NYC. These are their stories.

We Caring Clowns go not to mock tragedy,

but to caress it with our compassion,

We march straight into the battlefields of grief,

Armed with unconditional love, and our joyful silliness,

We bring a reminder of the resilience

and brilliance of the human spirit.

Gently tickling the heart and gathering forces in play,

we give fear a hearty shove.

Ah, Maybe the trickster Coyote has a soft belly after all.
